Wylie's Smith Library has a host of activities planned for February -- and they're all free! Come in out of the cold and see what's going on ...

 

Bandan Koro - Theatre & History - Feb. 6, 6:30 p.m.

Bandan Koro African Drum and Dance Ensemble returns with a new program, presenting theatrical selections of traditionally based West African drumming and dance, along with presentations of traditional folklore. For adults and families; best suited to kids third grade and older. Register at WylieTexas.gov/library.


3D Design with Tinkercad - Feb. 7, 6:30 p.m.

Learn the basics of 3D design using Tinkercad. Participants will create a chess piece suitable for printing on the library's 3D printer. No 3D experience necessary, but must be familiar with using a mouse and keyboard. For adults 18 and older. Class size limited; register at WylieTexas.gov/library. Create a free Tinkercad account at www.tinkercad.com prior to the workshop.

 

Lego League – Feb. 6 & 8, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Kids in grades 1 - 4 invited to show off creativity and build around a different theme each month. Cooperation and building on theme encouraged but not required. Age limits strictly enforced. No parents or younger/older siblings, please. Space is limited; register at the Children’s Desk. February’s theme: What Will I Be?

 

My Very Own Book Club – Feb. 13 & 15, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Kids in grades 1 and 2 encouraged to read the book of the month on their own time and then come to the meeting for discussion and a craft. Sign up at the Children’s Desk. Participation is limited; all participants get a free copy of the book. February’s title: “Wonder Horse: The Story of the World’s Smartest Horse,” by Emily Arnold McCully.

 

Teen Anti-Valentine's Day Party - Feb. 14, 6 to 7 p.m.

Kids in grades 6 - 12, come celebrate all things anti-Valentine's with chocolate, games, Mad-Libs, and other crafts.

 

3rd Grade Voyagers Club – Feb. 21, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Third-graders invited to this learning club just for you! Each month a new topic is explored. Register at the Children’s Desk to receive your challenge. Space is limited. February’s topic: Yoga with Ms. Christy.

 

BeTween Book & Movie Club – Feb. 28, 6 to 7 p.m.

Kids in grades 4, 5 and 6 invited to discuss books that have movie adaptations. Read the book and watch movie on your own, then come to the meeting to watch scenes from the movie, read excerpts from the book, discuss and have a snack. Sign up at the Children’s Desk; first 50 kids get a free copy of the book. February’s title: “The Little Prince,” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

 

Teen Book Club – Feb. 7, 6 to 7 p.m.

Sixth- through 12th-graders invited to share snacks and drinks and discuss the book of the month. Stop by the Teen Room for more information and to register. February’s title: “The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B,” by Teresa Toten.

 

Teen/Tween Poetry Café - Feb. 18, 5 to 7 p.m.

Aspiring poets, sign up for library's poetry café, presented by the SPL Teen Library Council. The audience will spend the evening listening to Wylie's young poets, complete with refreshments and Parisian atmosphere. Not a contest; a showcase of young talent. Kids in grades 4 - 12 invited to sign up in Teen Room now through Feb. 9 for a performance slot. Submit chosen poems to Kelsey.Sidwell@WylieTexas.gov for approval after registering. Mandatory rehearsal on Feb. 16 between 3 and 5 p.m.

 

Japanimation Club – Feb. 21, 6 to 7 p.m.

Sixth-through 12th-graders, come geek out about all things anime and manga in the Multi-Purpose Room. No registration required.

 

Family Lego Build – Feb. 27, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.

Come show off your creativity by building with the library’s Lego and Duplo sets in the Storytime Room. All ages welcome; no registration required. Children age 9 and younger must be accompanied by adult.

 

Booked on Fridays – Feb. 8, noon

Adults 18 and up invited to bring lunch or snack, enjoy good reads and conversation. Meets the second Friday of the month. Copies of the featured book available at the Help Desk or on Overdrive. February’s title: “Barracoon: The Story of the Last ‘Black Cargo’,” by Zora Neale Hurston.

 

Hygge at the Library - Feb. 28, 6 p.m.

Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is the Danish word used to acknowledge a moment as cozy or special. Unwind and unplug from the everyday rush and practice lots of hygge in library's cozy space with tea and self-directed crafts. Register at WylieTexas.gov/library.
