To express their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community, members of Wylie Police Department are planning a celebration, Blue Gives Back, Saturday, Aug. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Olde City Park.
Following the ambush of police officers on July 7 and 17 in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Wylie area citizens have backed the local Blue with many demonstrations of good will. The family celebration, which is a way of saying thank you, will include three water slides, cotton candy, snow cones, drinks and popcorn.
"We would like to thank the citizens of Wylie for their continued show of support," said Police Chief Anthony Henderson. "Although we have been fortunate not to have had incidents like the cowardly ambush-style killings that have happened in other communities, these events still impact our officers, families and the citizens.
"Wylie's citizens have always been strong supporters of public safety, but since these horrific incidents, Wylie PD has seen an overwhelming show of encouragement from our community. Many of you have dropped off food, gifts and cards for the officers, and some of you have paid for officers' meals without their knowledge.
"We could never begin to truly thank each of you for the generosity you have shown us throughout the years, but we wanted to plan an event to, in some small way, show our gratitude and appreciation."
